SUGGESTIONS FOR HOW TO DO SUBSTANCE ABUSE TREATMENT WHEN A 12 STEP PROGRAM DOES NOT SEEM LIKE A FIT

Suggestions for substance abuse treatment. Twenty-one million Americans suffer from addiction. On top of that, the 12 steps program doesn’t resonate with everyone. Between social anxieties and fear of sharing, some stay trapped in their addiction.

Here are some alternatives to treat substance abuse. Our addictions are rooted in many origins. Whether it’s a trauma, a dysfunctional family as a child, or any other origin, this disease can leave you feeling alone, worthless, and hopeless, among many other feelings. The good news is you can overcome substance abuse and we hope you can, too.

SOLUTION ONE

Attend online meetings

Many 12 step fellowships provide online meetings. You might think, “How the hell does that work?” Check out www.stepchat.com, where you participate in a meeting by conversing in a chat room! If you are not great at sharing in front of a group of random people this resource can play a pivotal role in your sobriety journey.

We have to acknowledge, as well, that some people are so profoundly trapped in their addiction, they need more intensive care.

SOLUTION TWO

Check into rehab

Going to rehab is scary. You  leaving the friends and loved ones you still, miraculously, have left. You’re going to room with strangers that you have never seen before. On top of it all, you’re going to, most likely, be detoxing from one or more substances. Alcohol is included on this list and is just as difficult to remove from your life.

Your first time in rehab you may not last the entire time recoomended. That is ok. You can try again, and again if you need to. Give yourself credit for taking a step in the right direction.

SOLUTION THREE

Get better for you

As obvious as this may seem, many people attend treatment or try to get clean for reasons ordered by the courts, social services, or even demanding family members.

When you try to seek treatment for other people you may be more likely to leave a treatment or not log on for an online meeting.

Unfortunately this may come in the form of hitting rock bottom. Every person’s reason for finding why they want to beat their addiction is going to be different. It may be a lon gpath to find your reason, but if you stick with it, you will be able to do it. When you decide to do it for yourself, you’re going to be even more scared than when doing it for external reasons. It’s frightening. You’re about to change your entire life.

Everyone’s story is unique. Some struggles with alcoholism root from childhood, maybe you were your dad’s barternder growing up, maybe you found yourself secretly drinking, or a traumatic event caused you to seek outside ways to self-medicate. Once you decide to begin a journey of treatment we hope one of these solutions can help you.
