SOLUTION ONE

Use a media console to fit spaces that need unique dimensions and still have storage

Most standard vanities are 22″ deep. In some cases, you just need a couple extra inches to make a space function properly. Consider using a media console. This one from Pottery Barn (pictured above) is only 19″ deep to save those few sacred inches. You could also look at Crate and Barrel or West Elm for options. You can also use a media console to maximize the width of a space. If you choose this route you will need to epoxy the top of the console to make it water resistant or get a custom cut stone to put on top. The good news is the piece you will need is not that large and you can often use a remnant. More great new, you can put the sink where you want! In the picture below you can see that the sink was placed on the right instead of the middle. There was no room for two sinks to this allowed it to be placed on the side of the divider and to leave a nice open space for another person to get ready.

Make sure when you are choosing a media console you are mindful of where the drawers or dividers are in relation to the sink.

If you are custom cutting a stone top make sure to order the sink first to have the exact dimensions on hand.

SOLUTION TWO

Use an IKEA bathroom vanity for an out of the box solution for a more narrow vanity

If you need an option that is less labor intensive try an Ikea vanity. Ikea furniture is by design a little bit smaller in dimensions than standard dimensions. This way you can get an out of the box vanity and the sink top to match it ready to install the day you bring it home. The example below is only 19 ¼” deep and includes a drawer for storage and comes in different colors.

SOLUTION THREE

Build a handmade shelf for a vanity that is exactly the size you need

If you have any DIY abilities or are just frustrated enough with an awkward space to do something really outside of the box (and by that we mean literally nothing sold in a box will work). Try a handmade shelf. In the picture below the vanity shelf is a custom 76″ long and 17″ deep. This allows lots of storage on top while not eating into the valuable walking space in this narrow bathroom. You may need to hire a handyman, carpenter or plumber to accomplish this but when you figure the cost of materials and labor and compare it to the price of a nice vanity in some cases it can surprisingly be pretty equal!

If you are worried about finding a sink to fit the narrow space don’t be! There are a lot of options that can fit even the tiniest of spaces.

This solution is great for powder rooms where you do not need to store unsightly things that guests will see.
