Making a daily routine that works for you and stick to it so you can live a more productive life.

Making a daily routine, your routine is not easy task. To the left is your phone, faintly buzzing, a constant reminder of your never-ending list of commitments. To the right is the reason for your dull headache, a cold cappuccino that won’t be finished due to over-thinking the many deadlines that you have pushed off until the last possible moment, per usual. Your boss says, “You rock!” as you submit, yet again, an assignment that should have never caused you to cry over a meal of unimpressive ramen and boxed wine the night before. You are frustrated, you are tired, but you cannot seem to get out of this mile-wide rut.

CREATE ROUTINE SCHEDULE WITH REASONABLE EXPECTATIONS

The key to success through a disciplined lifestyle is a ​realistic ​daily regiment. In simpler terms, create a schedule that you ​know​ you can​ ​achieve each day—the first step to develop ing a​ realistic routine. Do not try to create the same routine as a green beret, up at 4:30 a.m. with a five mile run in by 5:30 a.m. This would most likely cause most people to pass out by noon.

Monday through Friday, choose a time that would work best for you and set the alarm. Are you a morning person, then use those productive morning hours to your advantage. Are you a night person, then get as much sleep as possible here, and you can load up the later hours.

Remember, your morning alarm time will dictate your bedtime if your daily alarm is set for 5:30 a.m. that calls for a sleep time of 9:30 p.m. By creating a schedule that is easily anticipated, you can approach each and every day already knowing the amount of hours you have in front of you. Knowing this gives me the ability to allocate time where it is needed properly. With the amount of hours set, you can now create a list of essential things that you need to get done during the day.

Making your bed can be a big first step to setting a daily routine.

You can start your schedule by making your bed every day. This idea was made popular in a 2014 commencement speech by Navy Veteran, Admiral William McRaven, at the University of Texas, “​If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed​.” His words were, “​If you make your bed every morning, you will have accomplished the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride, and it will encourage you to do another task, and another, and another.”​ (W. McRaven, 2014). Making a difference in this life doesn’t equate to having a busy schedule, but rather by maintaining a level of predictability and discipline in one’s daily routine.

 

SOLUTION TWO

ELIMINATE EXCESS OBLIGATIONS

Learn how to allocate your time to set a good daily routine.

Eliminate excess obligations, you will be able to be fully present in all aspects of my day; allowing for more productivity and less anxiety. Create create a list of “need to do’s,” and ​perhaps “want to do’s.” While “want to do’s” are an important aspect of a fulfilled life, you cannot devote any time in that direction unless your “need to do’s” are completed in a prompt and efficient manner. From this point, you have complete control over what those priorities look like in your life. For some, that might be morning meetings, followed by lunch, concluding with a group fitness class in the evenings. For others that may be a standard 9-5 work schedule, dinner with the family, and walking the dog to wrap up the night.

The point is not to discuss how each minute of your day should be spent, but rather to hone in on the idea that structured discipline allows for significantly ​more​ freedom, if done correctly.

Keep in mind that mental health and “me time” is an essential part of the daily to schedule. It may come in the form of a workout, a meditation, or a cup of coffe before anyone else is awake. Adding in this time will actually make you more productive in the long run and not less.

SOLUTION THREE

LEARN WHEN TO SAY “NO” TO PEOPLE

Perhaps the most difficult task in adjusting your mindset on structure, is the art of learning when to say “no.” If you are an extrovert or a people-pleaser of sorts, telling others that I am you are not able to do something can be a serious internal battle.

Steve Jobs makes a powerful statement by saying, “​It’s only by saying ‘no’ that you can concentrate on the things that are really important.”

Conquer this by carving out a specific time and/or times throughout your week that can be given to others, this is your “yes time;” this is the time that you may volunteer, help someone with their life event, consult with someone on their project ideas. If your “yes time” is booked, then the answer is “no”.
Instituting structured discipline in your life doesn’t have to be a dreadful task, but rather the opportunity to see your time more clearly by eliminating distractions. As Admiral William McRaven would tell you, why don’t you simply start with making your bed?
