Don’t Freak Out – Look For Fun New Recipes!

So you’ve decided that you want to ease up on your meat intake, congratulations! Now, take a deep breath and calm down! Eliminating meat from your diet can have many health benefits; from weight loss to potentially reducing your risk for certain cancers -you’re already making major strides!

When making a major diet change, people tend to focus on what they will be missing versus focusing on what is to be gained.

Instead of thinking about your favorite meat charged dinner, take the time to find new meatless recipes and remember why you wanted to do this in the first place! Pinterest will be your best friend during this transition period! You can find just about any recipe (sans meat of course!) and spice things up in the kitchen! Best part, the visuals alone will have you salivating at the mouth completely forgetting what you think your “missing”.

SOLUTION TWO

Cut Out Meat Cold Turkey (pun intended)

If you’re the type of person that “Goes big or goes home”, then this may be your solution! Maybe you have amazing will power and aren’t easily tempted or maybe you think “If I don’t go cold turkey, I wont stick to this”. These are all very valid reasons why one would choose this option. On the off hand, you need to be aware of the vitamins and nutrients your body will now be lacking.

If you are used to eating a hamburger a day, your body will crave the nutrients provided from your daily dose of meat.

Consider adding daily vitamins to your diet such as: • B-12: Helps the body create red blood cells and supports the metabolism. This vitamin can naturally be found by eating eggs and milk. • Iron: Helps support the creation of blood cells as well as carrying oxygen throughout the bloodstream. Lack of iron can result in the feeling of fatigue and in some cases cause anemia, an iron deficiency. Naturally iron can be found in spinach, lentils, and broccoli. • Omega 3 Fatty Acids: An essential part in supporting your brain and eye functions as well as the cardiovascular system. They can naturally be found in fish such as salmon.

SOLUTION THREE

Ease Into It

Don’t put unwarranted pressure on yourself when removing meat from your diet, this may be your ultimate downfall! Try only eating meat a few days a week or designating a meal a day that consists of meat. You could focus on smaller portions each meal then eventually none altogether. On days when you ate meat, how did you feel versus days when you didn’t? Have you noticed changes in your skin?

By slowly eliminating meat from your diet, you will gain a better understanding of your body.

Adding in alternatives like tofu, tempeh, and plant-based items are a great way to fill in that newfound space on your plate. These are also a great way for you to experiment with new tastes and find out what your new favorites are. Look at this as a marathon, not a sprint!
