SOLUTION ONE

Become a rewards member to a hotel chain to get special privileges

Like it or not, hotels like you more when you are part of the club. (So do airlines by the way.) Almost all hotels chains have a rewards program that acts as a win-win for the business and the customer. The customer is more likely to choose the same hotel chain in an effort to build up points and can receive free hotel rooms and the hotel is receiving the business and tracking their customers.

There are also unwritten perks. If a non-rewards member and a rewards member walk up to a check-in desk and there is one suite left in the hotel, guess who is going to get it….and for less than the non-member. Free waters, turndown services and all around better attention are all some of the benefits of joining the club.

Most hotels offered:
Bonvoy

Coolest hotels:
Discovery

Good high and low options:
Wydham Rewards

If you don’t want to commit to one brand of hotels you can also do an online booking rewards system, like hotels.com where every 10th stay is free. You will rack up the free night stay but you won’t be given the extra special treatment at check-in either.

SOLUTION TWO

Use a travel agent that has relationships with the places you are traveling to

Travel agents are an amazing option for booking travel and you can still use your rewards program and earn points so this can be a two for one bonus situation!

No one knows how you like to travel more than you do so the thought of letting someone else book your sacred travel plans seems insane. Consider this, a (good) travel agent is only going to book you in verified accommodation that they have a relationship with.

This means three things.

  1. You can spend hours reading reviews or know that the place you are going is going to be the best for your budget because the travel agent wants you to have a good time and wants you to call them again to book.

2. You tell them your budget. Scared that no one can find the deals you can? Think again. They will find you deals on where you stay and what you do. Often times they will have access to activities and experiences you can’t find online or wouldn’t know enough about to book confidently.

3. More perks. Hotels want agents to steer clients their way. Clients who have good experiences book again with travel agents so everybody is working to make sure you are taken care of.

If you ever feel like you are getting pushed in a direction that you do not want to go then go with your gut and tell the person “no”. If they do not listen to move onto someone else. Your trip, your money, your call.

  • How to find a good agent:
  • Ask around your network
  • Use social media to ask your groups Make sure the agency has been in business for a long time
  • Email a bunch of options, their response time and communication styles can indicate how well you will work together.

You can also find agents to book only the excursions and activities for you.

SOLUTION THREE

If you are serious about travel, get a rewards credit card that focuses on travel points

If you are ready to go all in on travel rewards consider a credit card that rewards travel. A quick tool to rewards programs for credit cards is nerdwallet.com.

If you want to take it to the next level you can find cards with annual fees starting at $60 and going up to $500 and more a month to unlock major rewards and perks.

Hopefully, this is obvious, but do not use a credit card to spend money you don’t have just to get rewards points.
