SOLUTION ONE

Join a gym, temporarily

If you are not already a member at a gym take a look for a local gym to join. Maybe a gym membership was not in the budget before, but temporarily you could add this to your expenses so you have more options to be active as you heal. You coud even look at a free month of membership to get you through a little over half of the recover period.

If you look into gyms the most expensive ones will ikely have the most options for you. Fitness clubs like Equinox and Lifetime Fitness will offer pools, trainers, steam rooms, etc. Gyms like Anytime Fitness and Golds will offer more of an equipment only based experience.

Are you are you a cardio junkie and miss sweating? Try hitting the weights and then use the steam room or sauna to get in a good detox.

More of a treadmill person? Try replacing the belt with the water and swim laps for a surprisingly calorie-kicking workout.

Want to use machines? Use a rower or a bike. Place the heel of your foot on the pad for your shoe and leave the top half of your foot off the pad. This will relieve pressure on the break as you push against the pedals.

SOLUTION TWO

Choose the right machine

Not all machines are off limits as you try to stay fit during recovery. Scroll up to solution one to see that stationary bikes and rowing machines are possible solutions.

Stationary bikes and rowing machines are not off limits with a broken toe. Just make sure your doctor is on board before you grab your seat.

If you are trying to workout form home or do not have acces to these machines you can look into purchasing an at home stationary bike or rowing machine. This sounds a little extreme but if you think about it you can find a great piece of equipment for temporary use online for under $200 and would likely be able to sell it on a local trading site and recoup some of that cash (and get the space in your home back) when you are done with it. Another option is an elliptical machine, or (not a machine) but grabbing weights. You can go online and find great weight workout tutorials to give you guidance if you do not usually use weights to keep you toned while you recover.

SOLUTION THREE

Get in your steps walking

Check with your physician first, but most doctors will approve walking with a broken toe. First, you should get the right mix of songs to listen to as you walk, warn your friends that they should be expecting a long call, and use the time to catch up with people or download an audible book to listen to as you walk. To get the most out of time, set a long goal, and map it out first. You can use something as simple as google maps and change settings from drive to walk, and it will automatically override your phone to give you directions so you can set it and forget it.

If you are lucky enough to live by trails or bike routes, you could also consider taking a long bike ride and exploring different neighborhoods you’ve never been able to get to before.
